AdSense Optimization Tip: Heat Map

January 17, 2007

Google has now added its AdSense Heat Map to their optimization tips page. The main purpose of this illustration is to help webmasters to know which areas are more successful than others in a website or blog. This heat map gives an idea of where is the best location for your AdSense Ads in a page layout.

As you can see the picture shows different areas with different colors showing which areas are the best for AdSense.

Yellow Color: represents a weak area for your ads, so avoid placing them in this parts of your site or blog.

Orange Color: represent a strong are of the layout, this is a good place to add your ads because readers tend to look a lot to this areas.

Dark Orange Color: This represents the strongest area of the layout, this means that this is the best place for AdSense ads.

Not all blogs and sites have the same layout but the location is almost the same, remember not to place ads at the bottom of your blog because very few readers go to the bottom of the page, it is better above the fold.

Create Your Own WordPress Theme

January 16, 2007

WordPress is maybe the blogging platform with more themes and designs available at the moment, this means that you have a great range of options to choose from for your blog. Here in Blogger Lounge I´ve posted some resources where you can find lots of themes for your WP blog. Although there are many good themes out there you can always design one of your own and use it in your blog. Every successful blog has to have its own design with your own personal touch, why? Because the design of a blog is part of its brand and it is part of its style too. When you have a unique theme that no one else has, your blog looks more important and more reliable, your readers are going to be more confident and they are going to develop certain loyalty to your blog, because they´ll feel that they are reading a gret blog ,different than others.

I designed the theme for Blogger Lounge one month ago based on a theme designed by David Harreman, it was a css template called “RedBusiness” I converted it for WordPress using a technique explained by Max Limpag on his blog The Cybercafe Experiments. Max has a great posts called: “How to create a WordPress theme: A guide for the design-challenged non-geek” where he explains with detail how to create your own design from scratch. Here is a small fragment of his post.

“I’ve gone through a lot of WordPress themes, customizing one after another. I decided to simplify my blog design after buttons and stuff that depended on other services and servers delayed loading of my blog pages. I also thought that the clutter of having all these buttons and stuff was getting in the way of the content, and the AdSense clicks. My current minimalist design proves me right on this one. I found turning a CSS-based design into WordPress theme to be easy. I am not a geek and I do not have formal training on CSS, HTML or PHP. What I did was I read up on CSS in sites such as MaxDesign. I also went through the WordPress Codex, reading about template tags and files and while I was porting the theme, I went through the template files of themes like K2 and Phoenixrealm to look at how its coders did things.”

When I first read this post I thought it was very difficult to design a theme for WP, but after a while and after a little bit of practice I can assure you that it is very easy, of course you have to be creative, Max also has a post on his blog called “How to edit WordPress themes using Dreamweaver” , give it a look. Don´t be afraid and try, there is nothing to lose.

Blogging Business Giants

January 14, 2007

We all know that blogging has become a very profitable business, but why? Well one of the reason is because blogs are a very good source of information (in some cases), the number of blogs raised when new blogging tools like Blogger and WordPress appeared. In the beginning blogs were just like diaries, nothing more nothing less, but right now we´ve notice the power of what we know as “Blogging Corporations” , these huge money making machines are growing and spreading all around the Internet, what began as a simple hobby now is the main source of income for many bloggers, from Australia to Spain and from the U.S to India these blogging companies are changing the world of online business, they are earning thousands each month from advertisement and from affiliate programs like AdSense.

The traffic that these corporations handle is counted in millions of visits per month and millions of clicks per month, just imagine how much money they earn. Take a look to the Top 10 list.

Get Your Blog Indexed to Google Without Submitting

January 13, 2007

The truth about most search engines is that you have to submit your URL in order to get indexed but it can take months before your blog appears in the results, Google calls it the Sand Box effect because your blog or website is in hold before it appears But here are some easy steps to avoid this process and get listed very fast without submitting your blog. If you want your blog to get listed not just in Google but in all major search engines take a look to these 3 easy steps.

1. The first thing you have to do is search for free online directories to submit your blog. Just type in your favorite search engine “Free Search Engine Friendly Directory” you should get many results.

2. Try to visit each directory you see and submit your blog to each one of them, not all directories are going to admit your blog because some of them are specialized directories lets say that you are trying to submit your blog to a free medical directory and your blog is about cars then your submitting will not be approved. The clue is to submit to as many directories you can.

3. Be sure to use a text link with your keyword phrases when submitting rather than just your URL. This will help search engines determine what is your blog about. You´ll find that your blog is going to appear in a few days in search engine results.

Why? Because search engines like Google know that these “search engine friendly directories” are human edited therefore they know that if your blog is in their lists then it must have some value and they will also add it to their index.

That’s it. It is that simple. Try it and you´ll see.

Signage and Branding of your Blog

January 11, 2007

Your blog is your brand thats why it is not enough just a name and a logo, your blog needs something more. Once you have your blog up and running you have to create an identity, a brand identity involves more than just names and logos thats why in this posts I would like to talk you about “Signage”. The image is a very important part of the branding process and signage is going to help us increase our blog´s image.

But, what exactly is signage in a blog?

Well, it is a combination of visual elements that create an atmosphere or an environment inside the blog, in this way readers and visitors can feel comfortable and identified. The signage of a blog goes from the header to the footer and includes buttons, graphics, logos, colors and fonts. Your blog has to have its own “Soul” or its own identity, If you are using red for links then you have to use that same color for all of them, you cannot have green links and others with red this tends to confuse your readers. Another useful tip is to use the same design for all your buttons, if you do so your visitors are going to know that all similar icons in your site are buttons and no other thing.

Always maintain the same size and color for the text, let me give you an example: Use read for tittles , blue for links and black for the body of your text. Let me talk again about buttons, if you have metallic buttons use the same design for all of them, if you have glossy buttons use the same glossy effect. There are many ways to give an identity to your blog be creative and have fun but always remember the principles.
