Is Microsoft Losing The Empire?
April 18, 2007
There was a time in which Microsoft was the absolute ruler of technology, information and modern knowledge. But not anymore, the giant has been losing the empire piece by piece, new players are taking advantage of the weakness of Microsoft. Bill Gates announced that next year he will retire. This announcement adds uncertainty to the current situation of the company.
There’s a particular player that is taking advantage and that is becoming the next ruler, Google. Now let’s take a look to some battles that Microsoft has already lost.
Smart Phones
- Current Leader. BlackBerry
- Microsoft’s bet. Window’s Mobile
Mobile Music
- Current Leader. iPod
- Microsoft’s bet. Zune
Search Engines
- Current Leader. Google
- Microsoft’s bet. MSN Search
Social Networks
- Current Leader MySpace
- Microsoft’s bet. Windows Live Spaces
Browsers
- Current Leader. Mozilla FireFox
- Microsoft’s bet. Internet Explorer
What should the new direction do?

Got something to say?
I think they’re done. Someone comes out with something new, Microsoft creates their ‘own’ but, it’s just not good. In my eyes Microsoft kind of destroyed their own name.
Rather then the claiming that they are they best, its much better to stay silent and make the best products. May be Apple has less share of its useage, but surely prove their future. Google maintained to stay ‘Shhhh’ and made few of the best products. May be I would suggest Microsoft to throw out Steve Ballmer to maintain its respect.
Sean* I Totally agree with you, Microsoft is not creating new stuff . They need to invest more in their creative department.
Santosh* As always, thanks for your valuable comments. The advantage of Google is that it is a company built on innovation and talent.
I’m such a Mac addict! 🙂
The Zune looks ok, but apple is innovating is so many departments that i see no point in buying a Zune. Vista seems ok from what i’ve heard and read, but haven’t tried it. Only microsoft product i have is Office v.X for mac and rarely use it.
Google innovated and made sure their stuff works before launching, which is probably why i love google so much 🙂

We all know that M$ is like to copy whatever other people have invented or create a technology revolution and these M$ just won’t admit it that they’re copycat. Plus I won’t change into Vista because I still got issues with XP and Vista have its issues too. So why bother to go for Vista.
I’ll have to agree that Microsoft is losing more and more customers and users, but they are still making a ton of money selling the Xbox, WindowsXP, Windows Vista, and Microsoft Office. I’m sure they would probably like to get higher in to the competition in these other departments, but right now their flagship products are still leading the way. I also don’t completely agree with the fact that Firefox is leading over Internet Explorer. Firefox is leading over IE7, but IE6 still has Firefox beat as of July according to w3schools browser stats. Also keep in mind that Microsoft owns IE7 and IE6, and together they are beating Firefox by 20%+. Here is the link to their stats: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
I myself, use Firefox most of the time, but I think Microsoft has it beat simply because it ships with Windows and most people just use what they have rather then downloading something else.
