Is It Easy To Make Money With a Blog?

April 23, 2007

I want you to close your eyes and ask yourself, “Am I really going to make a difference with my blog?, or should I quit?” well the most logic advice is , don’t quit, do things different. Let’s face it, not all bloggers are doing this for the money, but it is an extra value to this hobby or profession, call it whatever you want. The truth is that it is not an easy task.

Through all this months I’ve seen a lot of blogs with lines like: “make money online” , “money making tips” , “we help you make money online” or “make money with AdSense and become rich” well, maybe those topics were hot two years ago, from my point of view, I really don’t want to read those kind of blogs anymore, well, maybe once in a while, it seems that 3 out of 5 blogs are about how to make money online , just because a guy was successful with his “Problogger” thing doesn’t mean that everyone following the same style will make it, and I am not saying that some of them don’t have valuable or useful content. To be honest , this site was launched with the same purpose, but I realized that if I really wanted to be successful and to prevail I had to offer something different.

I know that some people are not going to agree with me this time, and that’s not what I’m looking for. what I’m really looking for is to encourage all of you to do something different there are many readers who are looking for something unique, just give them what they want. From time to time I publish something related to money and blogs, but I try to give more, or from a different perspective.

What really makes me mad is to see blogs telling their readers how easy is to make money blogging when they don’t even make $100 per month. There has to a be a moment when you say: enough, I must be doing something wrong , how much time are you willing to wait to see the first dollar? , how much are you willing to give? You have to be smart and talented. Ok, so far I’ve earned $550 and as you can see I still don’t have AdSense or affiliate links in my site, I’m doing it through design, and i have other plans to make money with my blog. but not yet. Well i just want you to know what I think about this, now share your opinion with us.

I agree completely. It is way harder than it appears. My first thought was “Wow people have 5-10 thousand unique visitors per day and make thousands of dollars per month. If I could only get one tenth of the traffic, I would be making several hundred per month.” Haha! Isn’t that a farce? It is like anything, when you reach a certain point things get easier. The first 500 regular visitors are probably the hardest to establish and then after that your blog content starts working for itself to an extent, so its gains in both money and traffic become much easier.

I think that it is probably just like most offline businesses. It just takes time. Give enough value to your readers to keep them coming back. Once you have established a decent readership then start monetizing your blog.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

This is another example of what i was getting at last week when i went on the rant about blogging for innovation rather than money. The creative, innovative blogger, who has something valuable to share or say to their reader seems much more interesting than Mr. Blogforbucks.

Adamº I totally agree with you. The most difficult thing is to reach those 500 UV per day, never quit before that point.

Grantº again, I agree, as you and Adam said, its just about time.

Mattº You’re right, I believe that valuable content should be available for everyone, sometimes it’s very difficult to reach what we call a “great” blog.

Well Well, People write about ”making money online’ ”making money by blogging” because 99.8% are interested making money every way possible.. If stealing/robbery be legalised people would do that too. Yes, they get attracted to the topic ”making money online” because may be its the most read topic, in this internet era growing number of internet users people will never like to narrow their chances to earn more money.

There is no harm writing about ”making money online” yes there are hell lots of blogs about the topic.. But i belive ”if you can beat the best, go ahead and prove it!!” (I got no guts to beat anyone in that topic 😛 ).

Other topics do have little weightage than the topic problogger, johnchow etc chose.. like careerramblings write about entreprenuership, and making a better work atmosphere, or gaining a better job, Blogger Lounge writes about how to blog, inspiration, and heat of maintaining good relations with readers.. this may stand 2nd to making money online, but I think there would be a drastic change in loyal readerships, people feel happy, confident and secure reading fast, and exciting ways to make money (again I was one of them, or may be I am and learning how not to be)… than to read lots, implement the best ways to prove ”content as king”. Internet is about sources, linkbacks.. 100 are perfect bloggers about the topic, and a million twist those 100 blog owner words everyway possible to show the way to sky.

I repeat my words again ”If you can dare to beat the best, go ahead and prove it”..Get into it if your passionate to win sometime, not to be a player forever..

I agree with you Santosh. As you say, there is no harm, the harm comes when they realize that they’re just copying and that they must be doing something wrong, the harm comes when they realize that they’ve spent all these months trying to beat the big guys and they haven’t. Good comment my friend 😉

An interesting post. Apart from peronal and hobby sites I think most people are probably trying to make money from their blog not necessarily from ads but indirectly. More and more sites are tagging on blogs to their main websites to draw in the traffic

I’m so tired with all the mambo jumbo those who said that they can make money in an instant. From what I’ve experienced is that we need to work hard to earn it and it is not an easy task.

Wait you have only made $550 since May 2005? I made $1000 my first month. It took a lot of work and was hard but so what? Surely it is time to turn on Adsense and Join ReviewMe?

Great post, I’d rather tell the truth about my earning than hyping the things up. I have a long way to go. My earnings are increasing. Thanks for sharing.

Got something to say?
